Music and video in one free DAW.

DonutStudio is a free DAW for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It's built for composing and mixing music, hosting plugins, synthesizing vocals, and editing music videos, and it can tune notes microtonally. The free version is feature-rich; Pro adds the heavier tools.

DonutStudio

Notes as relationships

  • Every note's frequency comes from its link chain
  • Pure ratios from the harmonic series, at any interval and any harmonic
  • Move a master note and every note linked to it retunes with it
  • Link two notes and their tuning is set automatically, with no cents to juggle by hand
  • Import Scala scales, retune the whole session live as an MTS-ESP master, and let Root Path Tune keep a progression in tune for you
  • Microtuning survives export. Per-note pitch-bend MIDI and DAWproject carry your exact frequencies into any DAW
  • Samples and vocals join the same harmonic graph. WORLD resynthesis, DiffSinger, and UTAU all retune to your ratios (Pro)
  • A full DAW: clip arranger, audio and MIDI clips, mixing, and the video editor. Pro adds samples, vocals, and the score-reactive Media Machine
  • 3 platforms: Windows, macOS & Linux
  • 480+ Airwindows effects included free
  • 1,300+ instruments in the in-app browser

Built for the whole piece

DonutStudio grew from a tuning idea into a full production environment. It ships as a standalone app plus VST3 and CLAP plugins, with microtuning preserved on export.

16-track instrument host

Sixteen tracks, each with its own instrument and its own tuning through the harmonic graph: soundfonts/SFZ, a six-operator DX7-engine FM synth (OP-7), an analog-modeled VA synth (Sybil-16), and hosted VST3/CLAP plugins.

Modular node graph

A Bitwig-Grid-style patch editor: build instruments and effects from control, audio, and modulation nodes with any-to-any routing, and drop external plugins in as crash-isolated nodes.

Vocal synthesis

Sing a part in any tuning. DiffSinger neural singing, UTAU voicebanks, and WORLD resynthesis (beta) all follow your harmonic graph. (Pro)

HEJI score notation (beta)

A grand-staff view that auto-derives Helmholtz-Ellis just-intonation accidentals straight from your link ratios.

Media Machine — score-reactive visuals (Pro)

Beat-warped footage on the grid. Pro adds the score-reactive Media Machine: GLSL/ISF shader clips and a modulation matrix that routes RMS, onsets, notes, and JI link ratios into the visuals, plus GPU particles, raymarch, and per-frame scripting.

In-app store

Install soundfont, shader, and footage packs without leaving the app. New libraries appear as the catalog grows.

Watch a link form

Link, tune, hear

Shift-click to create a link. Double-click to cycle harmonics. Move a master and every slave follows, because the frequency is the relationship.
